Attorneys in Illinois are required to report MCLE compliance every two years by June 30. The two-year compliance cycle runs from July 1 to June 30. If your last name is A-M your MCLE compliance deadline is in even years and if your last name is L-Z your compliance deadline is in odd numbered years. The upcoming June 2024 deadline is for attorneys with last names starting A-M. You are required to complete your credit hours by June 30, but the reporting deadline is July 31.
The Illinois MCLE requirement is a minimum of 30 credit hours during the compliance cycle. Of the 30 credit hours, a minimum of 4 hours of professional responsibility, 1 hour of diversity and inclusion, and 1 hour of mental health/substance abuse are required.
If you do not complete your required MCLE hours by June 30 you must request a grace period extension through the board’s website and pay the $100 late fee by July 31. Filing for the grace period will give you an automatic extension until October 31 to complete your CLE and November 30 to report them. Failure to ask for this extension before July 31 will result in a $250 fee being assessed.
Illinois attorneys do not need to report their compliance to the MCLE Board at the end of their reporting cycle. Instead, you need to check your online transcript . If you have completed your MCLE requirement and your credits are properly showing up, you don’t need to do anything further. If you failed to complete your minimum MCLE requirement by the compliance deadline, you must file for the grace period extension.
