Make Sure You Are Up To Date On Your North Carolina CLE Requirements

Current North Carolina CLE Requirements 2023

North Carolina experienced attorneys are required to complete a minimum of 12 approved CLE hours each year. Attorney Credits’ North Carolina bundles are comprised of pre-approved CLE courses. Of the 12 hours, a minimum of two hours must be professionalism or professional responsibility, and a minimum of one hour must be in technology. At least once every three calendar years you must take at minimum one credit hour of substance abuse. If you happen to take an extra CLE in a calendar year, you can carryover up to 2 hours of professional responsibility/professionalism and up to 10 general CLE credit hours.

Any lawyer licensed before July 1 of each year is subject to all CLE requirements. If you are licensed after July 1, you are exempt from CLE requirements until the next calendar year.

All North Carolina attorneys must file an annual report and pay the required $3.50 per credit hour fee by the last day of February each year.

New North Carolina CLE Requirements 2024

Starting March 1, 2024, the new North Carolina CLE cycle will be March 1 to End of February. The compliance cycle will move from annual to every two years and the new requirement will be 24 hours. Of the 24 hours, a minimum of four ethics hours, one technology hour, and one Professional Well Being (PWB) will be required.

If you were admitted to practice in North Carolina in an odd year, you will be required to complete 12 hours for your End of February 2025 requirement (first year only). After 2025, you will be required to report all 24 hours in odd years. If you were admitted to practice in North Carolina in an even year, you will be required to report 24 credit hours by End of February 2026.

The new rules only allow for 12 carry over credits, all general hours. You will be required to complete a minimum of 4 ethics, 1 technology, and 1 PWB each compliance cycle. The $3.50 per credit hour reporting fee will be discontinued. Please note that some of these new rules may be subject to change based on North Carolina interpretation.
