When it comes to reporting completed continuing legal education (CLE) courses to the states, there are two main differences. There are self-reporting states where attorneys must self-report and there are provider reporting states. In this short blog about CLE reporting, we are going to cover what states Attorney Credits reports to and how frequently we report.
Reporting questions are one of the most frequent questions we get. And it is important to understand who is reporting your completed CLE courses and how frequently they get reported. Having your courses reported in a timely manner is something you should consider before choosing a CLE Provider. Most states require that providers report within 30 days of course completion. At Attorney Credits we report every Thursday to make sure that the states get your completion information in a timely manner.
There are two states that don’t fit into the every Thursday reporting cycle. The first is Texas. We report to Texas every Monday (as per Texas) and on the 1st of each month. Texas has a weird reporting system that requires that you have your completed courses reported before the end of the month in which they are due. Every other state allows you to report after the first for courses completed before the end of the month. But not Texas. Texas is also considered a self-reporting state, in that Texas attorneys are responsible for checking their Texas Bar account and reporting completion as needed.
Because of the odd way that Texas does reporting you have to be super careful if it is the last week of the month. Any courses that you complete in Texas the last Monday of the month to the last day of the month MUST be self-reported to be on time since our next report is sent on the 1st. Therefore, please self-report if your completed courses fall within this period.
Puerto Rico also has a different reporting cycle. We report to Puerto Rico on the 1st and 15th of each month. Puerto Rico requires that we physically mail in completion reports. Since it is mailed and the fact that they must manually enter the information, it can take Puerto Rico several weeks to enter your completed courses.
