Indiana CLE Requirements and Rules

Indiana CLE for Experienced Attorneys

In the state of Indiana, the Indiana Commission for Continuing Education oversees enforcing Indiana CLE Requirements and Rules. The mandatory continuing legal education requirements can be found in Rule 29 of the Rules for Admission to the Bar and Discipline of Attorneys. In 1986 Indiana became the 18th state to require attorneys to complete CLE.

Every Indiana attorney is required to complete no less than 6 CLE hours each year and no less than 36 CLE hours in each 3-year compliance period. At least 3 of the hours shall be in professional responsibility. All attorneys should make sure that they are aware of the full Indiana CLE Requirements and Rules.

Indiana CLE for New Attorneys

Newly admitted Indiana attorneys must complete a 6-hour applied professionalism course during their first 3-year compliance period. You must complete the course after January 1 of the next calendar year after admittance, and before December 31 of the third calendar year. Failure to complete the course could result in a suspended license.

Indiana CLE Compliance Dates

In September of your compliance year the Commission will send you a CLE statement stating if you have completed your CLE requirements or not. You must complete your entire CLE hours before December 31 or your compliance year or you will be sanctioned $150.00 on January 1. Failure to complete your requirement by May will result in the Supreme Court suspending your license.
